Hasta la Manana, Wisdom Teeth!
After much procrastination, (years worth!) I finally had my wisdom teeth removed. I kept saying that I would have it done, but seemingly always found an excuse to put off this procedure. I must say, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I’m four days into the recovery and I’m feeling about 90% normal now. Sure, I look a little like John McCain with the swollen cheek, and heck, a few days ago I even possessed his same lisp. But really, it wasn’t all that bad.
I was originally going to have it done under IV Sedation, but due to my insurance not covering it, I was forced into the local anesthetic approach where I would be awake and fully cognizant of what would be occurring. After much research, I realized that while local may not be was pleasant (as if there is any pleasant surgery), it would ultimately be the safest approach. I don’t react well to most sedation, and I get sick for most strong medication, so really it was in my best interests to go with the local anesthetic.
The procedure itself was fairly straight forward and not complicated. There was a bit of pulling, and a huge assortment of dental paraphernalia in my mouth, but everything was finished in less than thirty minutes. The most time consuming part of everything was the actual waiting for the dentist to come in and begin everything. The worst part was about seven hours later when the throbbing hit. Thankfully, my wife was there and I’m so happy that she was. Her mere presence, soothing touch, and soft voice far surpassed any sort of pain killer. She made the entire post-surgery entirely bearable, and almost enjoyable (as enjoyable dental-surgery can be).
